[stela]

[stela]

Stoneware & porcelains, wire, rocks, various surface treatments, fired in atmospheric kilns

The term stela suggests the work is meant to be standing upright. However, the kiln environment to which the [stela] was exposed, disintegrated its structure. What is left are fragments of the pieces.

This work focuses on the much-needed grounding aspect of my life experience. Slim, light structures grow from 2 cm up to 60 cm long. They reveal a hexagonal wire structure underneath porcelain and stoneware surfaces. In opposition to its title [stela], the work is not standing upright; consequently, the title is in brackets. While being fired, the structures disintegrated in the kiln environment. They transformed into broken pieces, with the wire structures melted into the clay, even though hexagonal structures are known to be the sturdiest structures in nature. As they include wire, they address a dichotomy of the natural and the man-made. They are intended to foster questions about imbalance, precariousness, and vulnerability.
